Sweet and Lowdown
Summary: Woody Allen indulges his jazz obsession with this mock-biography of Emmet Ray (Sean Penn), a 1930s jazz legend. But when he meets Hattie (Samantha Morton), a shy mute woman who loves his music, he falls for her. However, his inability to be faithful dooms their relationship. Synopsis: Woody Allen indulges his jazz obsession (he regularly plays clarinet in a Manhattan jazz club) with this period mock-biography of a legendary musician. Emmet Ray (Sean Penn) is a 1930s jazz guitarist considered one of the finest musicians ever. For all the sensitivity of his music, Emmet is a louse off-stage; a former pimp, he's a drunk who fritters his cash and treats women with contempt. But when Emmet meets Hattie (Samantha Morton), a shy, mute woman who earns her living doing laundry, he discovers that she loves his music, and he falls for her. However, his inability to be faithful, and his inflated self-opinion eventually dooms their relationship. Emmet later marries Blanche (Uma Thurman), a beautiful and refined woman, but she is no more interested in fidelity than he is, and he realizes how foolish he's been.
