Summary: In 1979, in East Woburn, Massachusetts, the town's water supplies were found to be contaminated by dangerous industrial chemicals. The residents began to suspect that local factories were the culprits behind the pollution, which seemed to lead to an unusually high rate of leukemia amongst the town's children. Anne Anderson's son Jimmy died of leukemia, and she becomes the spearhead of an effort to sue the huge corporations who own the factories. She approaches Jan Schlictmann who works in a small law firm , and hires him to take on high priced corporate lawyers Jerome Facher and William Cheeseman.

In 1979, in East Woburn, Massachusetts, the town's water supplies were found to be contaminated by dangerous industrial chemicals. The subsequent discovery of toxic waste led the residents to suspect that local factories were the culprits behind the pollution. Also, the people of East Woburn believed that the contaminated water was a factor in the development of an unusually high rate of leukemia amongst the town's children. Anne Anderson (Kathleen Quinlan) is among the residents who have lost a child to the illness - her son Jimmy died of leukemia. She becomes the spearhead of an effort to hold legally responsible the large corporations who own the local factories. She approaches Jan Schlictmann (John Travolta), who works in a small law firm , and hires him to sue the corporations for millions of dollars. Schlictmann is forced to take on high powered corporate lawyers Jerome Facher (Robert Duvall) and William Cheeseman (Bruce Norris).
