Tom Hanks The epitome of the ordinary and laid-back "everyman", Tom Hanks is one of the most popular Hollywood stars to grace the big screen today, and continues to enjoy one of Tinseltown's most successful ever careers.

Californian by birth, Hanks spent his childhood on the move with his father, who was a chef, and two elder siblings. His parents split when he was five. Eventually he resettled in California during high school, where he developed an interest in acting. He commenced studies at Chabot College, but after seeing a production of The Iceman Cometh, transferred to the drama program at California State University, intent on becoming an actor. So intent, that he soon dropped to really focus on his dream.

He made his professional stage debut in The Taming of the Shrew in 1977, and the following year headed to the Big Apple for a stab at success. After an inauspicious debut in the slasher film He Knows You're Alone (1979), he relocated to Los Angeles. There he picked
