Winona Ryder
Winona Ryder Winona Ryder was born in 1971 in Winona, Minnesota, hence the name. She later took the name Ryder from one of her father's music albums, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Her parents, Michael and Cindy Horowitz, were (as described by Winona) politically active intellectuals, who loved a good protest and were well connected within their own circles as evidenced by Winona's godfather, Dr. Timothy Leary and family friend Allen Ginsberg. For much of her childhood she was raised in a commune and faced a great deal of difficulty when she enrolled in school, including a good beating at the hands of a group of boys who thought the androgynous looking Ryder was a gay boy. The not so surprising experience was led to her home schooling, which freed her to enroll in the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco.
