Biography
Willem Dafoe
Willem Dafoe I'm a regular guy in real life. I guess I just want to be reckless in my work.

Born on July 22, 1955, in Wisconsin. The seventh of eight children, young Willem began acting at the University of Wisconsin, where he studied drama before dropping out in the early 1970s and joining the experimental Milwaukee theater group Theatre X. In 1977 he settled in New York City, acting with the Performance Group, but broke away, along with artistic director, Elizabeth LeCompte, to form the Wooster Group, another avant-garde but much-respected theater company. Dafoe and LeCompte, a couple since the late 1970s, have one son, Jack.

Dafoe's first significant appearance on the big screen came in The Loveless (1982), a drama about a group of motorcyclists. His dark, edgy performance as a counterfeiter in To Live and Die in L.A. (1985) earned Dafoe the attention of director Oliver Stone, who cast the lanky young actor in his Vietnam War drama Platoon (1986)
