This brooding actor has avoided becoming pigeonholed, despite enduring a pervasive teen-heartthrob status early on in his career. Depp has proved his acting chops in a variety of roles, making it a point to take on different characterizations, while demonstrating a preference for portraying oddball characters and outsiders.

Born in Kentucky in 1963, the Depp household relocated to Florida, yet never settled down; the family moved 12 times within the sunshine state. Depp had begun experimenting with drugs by the time his engineering father and homemaking mother divorced. Johnny eventually dropped out of school to pursue a career in music; his garage band, Kids, even opened for Iggy Pop.

Depp's then-wife, makeup artist Lori Allison, introduced him to Nicolas Cage who encouraged Depp to try film; it only took the newcomer one audition to land a role in 1984's A Nightmare
