Kathryn Bigelow Hailed as a great stylistic filmmaker, Kathryn Bigelow has placed her distinctive stamp on several male-dominated genres. She's an intellectual able to match and charm film journalists with honest and concise perspectives on her own work. The statuesque (5ft 11ins) and strikingly beautiful Bigelow has also modeled for Gap, as well as acting in the ironically militant feminist fantasy Born in Flames (1983). Despite a seemingly small body of work, her filmmaking displays awesome ability.

Born 1952, San Carlos, California, USA, as the only child of a paint store manager and a librarian, Kathryn was a talented painter; at 20, she won a scholarship to the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Program. When she entered Columbia University, she decided to channel her talents into film, although she studied theory and criticism rather than production.
